First evening in Sultanahmet is the two hours after you have a key, not the three hours before you have one. The kerb, Gate 9 and the CEO 34 pole belong to the arrival. The evening is not a museum day
The night fails when it tries to be a morning. Ticket desks, security lines and a palace interior do not forgive a night flight. The Hippodrome does. The Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia, seen from the park with almost nobody on the flags, do. That is the whole argument of this page, and it is the one we will not move for a guest who is still wearing the plane.
Landing to hotel from Istanbul Airport is two and a half to three hours once you add passport control, bags and the 48 km, 45 to 60 minute run into the Old City. From Sabiha Gökçen the same hotel is 65 km and 75 to 95 minutes, plus the terminal. A 14:00 IST arrival is a 17:00 key. A SAW arrival at the same clock is closer to 18:00. Neither of those hours is a Topkapı hour.

The two-hour walk that earns the landing
Leave the bags. Take a jacket. Start at the Hippodrome, which is the park in front of the Blue Mosque, not a separate ticket. The Egyptian Obelisk, the Serpent Column and the Stone Obelisk sit on the same axis. Twenty minutes here at dusk is enough. You are standing on the old race track. The city explains itself without a caption.
Turn toward the Blue Mosque. Stay outside unless you landed before 10:00 and still have legs, which almost nobody in this paragraph does. The floodlighting does more for this night than the carpet does after a long-haul. Fifteen minutes on the courtyard side is a full stop.
Cross the park to Hagia Sophia. Again, outside. The volume of the building at night, with the minarets of the mosque still in the same frame, is the picture people actually keep. Go inside on a morning when you are fed and the queue is yours. The visitor gallery is a timed object. It is not a 18:30 consolation prize.
If you have twenty minutes left and the legs are honest, walk one block toward the column of Constantine or back along the tram line and stop. That circuit is the first evening in Sultanahmet. Do not add the cistern. The line at the cistern after 17:00 is a line of people who also thought the evening needed an interior.
What stays shut, and what you should leave shut
Two calendar facts wreck a landing night that tried to become a first interior.
- Topkapı is closed on Tuesday. If you land Tuesday afternoon, the palace is not waiting as a backup. The square still is. Put the palace on Wednesday.
- The Grand Bazaar is closed on Sunday. It is also the wrong building at 19:00 on any other day. The shutters and the empty lanes are a morning subject.
Friday prayer reorders visitor timing at the Blue Mosque and at Hagia Sophia. An evening landing on Friday is still a walk. It is a worse idea for a late interior. Confirm current museum hours on the Ministry of Culture and Tourism museums portal the week you fly, because seasonal tickets move and an old blog post will not.

Dinner in a five-minute radius
Eat where you can walk back without looking at a map. The restaurants on the streets immediately behind the Hippodrome and along the tram will feed you. A rooftop with a view is fine if it is still in that radius. A ferry to Karaköy for the famous place you saved is how the night turns into a 23:00 check-in with a cold dinner.

Book the airport run before dessert
The booking guests skip tonight is the one that takes them out. Old City hotels sit on streets a car cannot idle on. A 05:00 taxi app is a queue you do not want after three good days.
