First Day in Istanbul: Clear 4 Clock Checks

Istanbul Trips 👁️ 23

First day in Istanbul is the car and the square at dusk. A 14:00 landing is not a museum and not a Bosphorus cruise.

First day in Istanbul is the car, the hotel key, and the square at dusk. A landing at 14:00 is not a museum and not a boat. Istanbul Airport is 48 km and 45 to 60 minutes from Sultanahmet, 45 euros for the vehicle, Gate 9, point CEO 34. Sabiha Gökçen is 65 km, 75 to 95 minutes, 50 euros, pillar 10. Landing to a key is about two and a half to three hours from Istanbul Airport. Topkapı, the long cruise, and the transport card wait until the next morning.

First day in Istanbul is the car, the hotel key, and the square at dusk. A landing at 14:00 is not a museum and not a boat. Istanbul Airport is 48 km and 45 to 60 minutes from Sultanahmet, 45 euros for the vehicle, up to 6 passengers and 6 bags, Gate 9, point CEO 34. Sabiha Gökçen is 65 km, 75 to 95 minutes, 50 euros for the vehicle, pillar 10. Hagia Sophia Travel, TÜRSAB 16602. The partner write-up of the same arrival is first day in Istanbul.

Terminal maps for the European airport sit on Istanbul Airport. The Asian airport’s own page is Sabiha Gökçen.

First day in Istanbul starts at the kerb

Wheels down is not the start of sightseeing. Add taxiing, passport control, the belt, and the walk to the pole. Landing to a key runs about two and a half to three hours from Istanbul Airport, and about three to three and a half from Sabiha Gökçen. A 13:00 touchdown is a late afternoon in the district where you are sleeping. Topkapı does not fit in what is left.

How many nights that leaves you is a different sum, already on how many days in Istanbul. Day one is only the first of those nights. The monuments start the morning after you have slept.

IST or SAW, then the pole

Read the three letters on the boarding pass. IST and SAW are not two doors of one car park. The European airport is the shorter run into Sultanahmet. The Asian airport adds the bridge. Book the van that matches the letters, before you fly, on Istanbul Airport to Sultanahmet. The same corridor on this brand is Istanbul Airport to Sultanahmet. One company. Put the flight number on the form so a delay does not cancel the meet.

We do not hold a name board as the default. At Istanbul Airport you walk to Gate 9 and look for the CEO 34 sign on the pole. At Sabiha Gökçen the same sign is at pillar 10. A child seat has to be on the booking, not requested at the curb. Tell us the hotel name. Old City streets often end in a pedestrian lane, and the driver stops at the door a car can actually reach.

The square after the key

Drop the bags. Eat within a few minutes of the hotel. Then walk. If you are in Sultanahmet, the useful first hour is the Hippodrome as the light drops: the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia from the outside, with the suitcase already in the room. That hour is written as its own short page, first evening in Sultanahmet. Go inside on a morning when you are fed.

Friday prayer pauses both mosques. A Tuesday landing does not open Topkapı. The square at dusk still works on both of those days. Save the palace for the next morning on the planner.

The walk is short when the hotel name on the booking is the door a car can reach. From that door to the Hippodrome is a few minutes, not a tram ride. Shoes you can take off in a minute, and a scarf, belong in the bag for the next morning. Tonight the shoes stay on. The prayer hall can wait until you have slept.

What waits until tomorrow

The boat waits. A public long cruise spends the middle of the day and is still out in the late afternoon. Our 120-minute finale belongs on a deluxe day or a later tick, not on the evening you landed. Which voucher holds water is on Bosphorus cruise. Leave it for a day that does not start at passport control.

The city transport card waits too. It is the right tool for a tram after the bags are upstairs. It is a poor tool for six suitcases at Gate 9. Fares and the 120-minute transfer window are on Istanbulkart. Buy it tomorrow at a station machine if you want the tram. Tonight the vehicle is already paid.

A guided half day is the one exception, and it is narrow. You need to be on the ground at Istanbul Airport before about 10:00, checked in, and still sharp. A midday landing, or any ordinary Sabiha Gökçen landing, spends the guide on a tired guest. Build that early half day as a short block. A full palace with the harem is a next-day object.

Four clocks on day one

Print the row that matches the ticket you already hold. A first day in Istanbul that ignores the landing time is the day that queues for a ticket office with the suitcase still in the hall.

Four steps before you fly

First day in Istanbul, the Blue Mosque lit at dusk after the hotel key

First, circle IST or SAW. First day in Istanbul is a different length on each code. The hotel choice comes after the letters.

Second, book the inbound to the real hotel door and put the flight number on it. Gate 9 or pillar 10, CEO 34 on the pole.

Third, book the return the same sitting. A 16:00 Istanbul Airport departure is a midday pickup from Sultanahmet. An 11:00 Sabiha Gökçen departure is about 07:00. That morning is not a museum. The European return is Sultanahmet to Istanbul Airport, and the partner desk is Sultanahmet to Istanbul Airport.

Fourth, leave the interiors, the long boat, and the transport card for the morning after. Tonight is the key, a meal near the hotel, and the lit square.

Common questions

What should I do on a first day in Istanbul?

Land, meet at the pole, check in, walk the square at dusk, eat nearby, sleep. Add a guided half day only if you were on the ground at Istanbul Airport before about 10:00.

How long is the drive from Istanbul Airport?

48 km and 45 to 60 minutes in ordinary traffic, 45 euros for the vehicle. Budget two and a half to three hours from wheels down to the key.

Where does the driver stand?

Istanbul Airport: Gate 9, CEO 34 on the pole. Sabiha Gökçen: pillar 10, the same sign. A handheld name board is not the default meet.

Should I go inside Hagia Sophia tonight?

Not after a midday or later landing. See it lit from the Hippodrome. Go in on a morning when the queue is yours.

Can I take the public boat on arrival day?

The long public cruise is still out in the late afternoon. A 14:00 landing does not catch it. Read the cruise page and put the water on a later day.

When do I book the car back to the airport?

With the inbound, before you fly. A 16:00 Istanbul Airport ticket is a midday hotel pickup. The street will not hold a car at dawn on a guess.

Sleep on the arrival. The next morning can hold a private day. Keep the arrival car, the return, and the planner as three bookings made before the flight, not three decisions at the kerb.
